The Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver was designed for concealed carry by civilians and as a backup firearm by law enforcement and military personnel. Popular during the California Gold Rush, it has been described as a “Reliable and easily concealable pocket pistol”.
Introduced almost a year before the famous gun that bears Sam Colt’s name, the 1849 pocket model was one of the most widely used revolvers of its day. It may have been small, but it promised to be bigger on reliability. After all, it featured a six-shot cylinder that did not require reloading after each shot and an improved loading lever latch that made the loading process faster and less prone to jams. The weapon also had a traditional “cap and ball” percussion system. Rather than using preloaded cartridges, each chamber in the cylinder was loaded with gunpowder and then topped off with a percussion cap containing a primer compound. The hammer would strike the cap, igniting the primer and firing the weapon.
There can be no doubt that Samuel Colt, the founder of Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company, was one of the true geniuses of America’s industrial revolution.
